Before you start

Listen to the words below in context. Try to guess their meanings.

2  Work in pairs. Read the recycling instructions above and answer these questions.

1. How many types of recyclable paper are there?

There are three types of recyclable paper: white paper, newspaper and mixed-colour paper.

2. What types of plastic are not recyclable?

Plastic food wraps, yoghurt containers, syrup bottles, nappies and bottle tops are the types of plastic that are not recyclable.

3. In your opinion, why is it important to recycle?

Students’ own answers.

 

3  Read the instructions again. In pairs, make a list of things that we can and that we cannot recycle.

 

4  Think about all the recyclable/reusable things you and your family have at home. Make a list. Prepare a routine for you and your family for recyclable/reusing them. Tell your friends.

Answers may inclde:

• plastic bages.
• plastic bottles.
• glass bottles.
• toys.
• fabrics.
• paper.

Routines:

• sorting the different materials into different bins.
• reusing plastic bags.
• reusing paper if possible.

 

5  Match the verbs with their opposite.

6  Fill in the blanks with six verbs from exercise 5.

The sun (1) heat up the air. Humid hot air rises and expands. Expansion (2) cools the air and makes clouds and rain. The sun also (3) warms up the Earth. As the Earth heats up, the ice in the Poles (4) melts. Pollution (5) accelerates this process. We have to (6) slow it down.

7  Listen to the dialogue between tow friends. Then, fill in the blanks with the following words.

Tareq: Hi, Laila! How are you?

Leila: Hi, Tareq! I'm very busy. I'm a member of the Kids (1) Ecology Club.

Tareq: What is the Kids Ecology (2) Club?

Leila: It is a non-profit organization. It helps young people to defend the (3) environment.

Tareq: And what do you do?

Laila: We take part in projects about keeping our cities clean. We also try to, develop ways to preserve water and energy and to prevent (4) pollution.

Why don't you join us?

Tareq: I don't know. What is your project?

Laila: I want to start (5) recycling in our school cafeteria.

Tareq: Really? How?

Laila: Well first, I explain to my classmates why recycling is good and I show them how to recycle. Then, we talk to our teachers, to the School Head and to our parents about recycling. Next, we make a recycling (6) centre in the cafeteria.

Laila: Great! Why don't you join us?
